Trans Studies: Happy(?) Birthday, Marsha!

They shout ‘Happy birthday!’ with such an immense amount of joy and ignorance

Ignorance for their words and actions, or lack thereof

Ignorance of transphobia, homelessness, racism, sexism

Ignorance of the world and how they contribute to it

But they say happy birthday to the dying drag queen

Asking for a dollar to be spared for her

She broke the law for her people

To help save, rescue, and rehabilitate trans youth of color without homes

Her loyalty rested with the queens in the park

Never with the law

And why would she? Why would she protect the same law that hurts her?

But she protects her own, even when it’s not reciprocal

Endless care service given

Endless sacrifices

The only thing given back is ‘Happy birthday!’

Is it a happy birthday?

Who is protecting her tonight?

Who will keep away the violence?

Who will be on guard?
